Let's Play C&C Red Alert 3: You Can't Do That! You've Created A Time Paradox!

Welcome to the eighth installment of this Command and Conquer Anthology Let's Play. The success of C&C3 allowed for the continuation of the series, continuing the trend comfort through camp, cameos, and live-action cutscenes. In some ways, the game is Red Alert 2 with a new coat of paint, accommodating the an art style and unit models that are more at home in the 2010s than they would be 10 or more years earlier, while in others it expands gameplay functionality and features that made it stand out as an equal to earlier franchise entries, but, I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

As is pretty standard for these playthroughs, I only have vague recollections of Red Alert 3, not having played it for at least 10 years. As such, I kindly ask that, for my sake and those of viewers/readers who are less knowledgeable of the goings-on, we should all keep spoilers to an absolute minimum. Short of discovering that absolute zero is indeed possible, let's all do our best!

How this will work

As with prior threads, I will be playing through the campaigns before hopping on to the game's expansion. It has been a decade since I last played this, so I will be somewhat blind to the story and how things flesh out, so I ask that we, as usual, keep spoilers to an absolute minimum. I will be exploring the Prima Game Guide as the story/game progresses as well, and will have entries interspersed that speak directly from that entry.

What games should we see/expect?

1995 – Command & Conquer
1996 – Command & Conquer – The Covert Operations

1996 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert
1997 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Counterstrike
1997 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – The Aftermath
1998 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Retaliation

1999 – Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
2000 – Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun – Firestorm

2000 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
2001 – Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge

2002 – Command & Conquer: Renegade (Or Renegade X)
2003 – Command & Conquer: Generals
2003 – Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour

2007 – Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
2008 – Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath

2008 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 <--- You Are Here
2009 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Uprising
2009 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Commander's Challenge

2010 – Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

--- I'm not against mods, but I have no clue which ones are good or bad, and will consider adding any to the list upon request ---

I will preface by saying I am not the best strategy player ever (Company of Heroes proved that one!) but I shall attempt to play on the harder difficulties, when available or if possible.

:siren::siren:

And since this entire thing is being done chronologically, that means ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS AT ALL ABOUT ANYTHING! :siren::siren: NO. SPOILERS. :siren::siren:

The Command and Conquer series has very little in terms of adaptations or spin-off content, having, I think, one "expanded universe" book sold in 2009, so let's just let things play out as the games intended them to. Thanks!

:siren::siren:

The year is, uh... you know what, let's not think about it. The Soviets are on the brink of defeat as the Kremlin is under siege and staff dart around attempting to salvage whatever items they can find, or simply to save themselves. Romanov is nowhere to be found and all seems lost. Except for one Colonel Anatoly Cherdenko and General Nikolai Krukov - the former revealing a secret underground laboratory and, with the help of Dr. Zelinsky, they travel through time in a desperate attempt to change their fate. While some changes are readily noticed upon their return, unforeseen consequences are just around the corner...

The Soviet Union

A totalitarian regime whose scheming leaders constantly push a self-righteous agenda focused on achieving a global communistic state, primarily by fielding overwhelming armies of conscripts and poorly-trained grunts.

The Allies

A coalition of Western countries, bound together in defense of the free people of the world, the Allies have spent years fighting Soviet aggression, often prevailing through sheer determination.

The Empire of the Rising Sun

An ancient land of strict tradition and futuristic technologies, their beloved Emperor Yoshiro has decided it is now time to teach the world a few lessons in civility ... through superior firepower.

Conscript
ARMOR: Infantry
WEAPON: ADK-45
COST: 100
ABILITY: Molotov Cocktails

Poorly trained, yet highly enthusiastic due to mental conditioning and healthy propaganda, Conscripts heedlessly charge into battle firing assault rifles and hurling Molotov cocktails in blind allegiance to the State.

Author's Note: Your basic infantry, armed with Molotovs for house-clearing duties.

Flak Trooper
ARMOR: Infantry* (Technically unspecified in the wiki I use)
WEAPON: Flak Cannon
COST: 400
ABILITY: Magnetic Mines

Gloriously free after years spent in gulag, brutish Flak Troopers serve Mother Russia by hefting large anti-air flak cannons and attaching mines to enemy armor. Used on ground targets, their cannons are even more impressive.

Author's Note: Anti-armor and anti-air, they are a danger to grouped air units and their mines can be devastating.

Natasha Volkova
ARMOR: Commando
WEAPON: Korshunov SV Sniper Rifle
COST: 2000
ABILITY: Airstrike

A product of advanced Soviet training programs, Natasha is a hero of the Soviet Union, able to turn the tide of battle with nothing more than her trusty Korshunov rifle and her undying cruelty. She can call in airstrikes to kill larger targets, or snipe pilots to claim their vehicles for Mother Russia. What Natasha’s scope sees, dies.

Author's Note: Her special ability is a far cry from other heroes, requiring Natasha to stay in place and wait an agonizing 5 seconds for effect. Not bad, but not great.

Bullfrog
ARMOR: Support Vehicle
WEAPON: PVS 5-7 Tucha 23mm Cannon
COST: 900
ABILITY: Man Cannon

Amphibious transports with an unusual troop deployment system: infantry are launched out of a fairly accurate man-cannon, allowing for fast and strategic enemy engagements supported by the ‘frog’s AA gun.

Author's Note: One has to wonder who is collecting and packing all those parachutes... A great mobile anti-air and transport platform.

KDB-5 Sickle
ARMOR: Light
WEAPON: PKX 12.7mm Machine Guns (x3)
COST: 900
ABILITY: Flea Jump

Originally designed for riot suppression, this walking gun turret is still excellent for crowd control, and is capable of leaping obstacles in order to reach its objectives.

Author's Note: Useful for disrupting infantry and surprise attacks, though vulnerable against anything but (non-antitank) infantry.

Tesla Trooper
ARMOR: Heavy Infantry
WEAPON: Tesla Coilgun
COST: 750
ABILITY: Electro-Magnetic Disruptors

Enemies of the Soviet Union’s fear these elite mechanized patriots and their deadly tesla cannons. Their only vulnerability comes when they release a devastating EMP attack, rendering their foes—and themselves—temporarily helpless.

Author's Note: They are surprisingly ineffective due to their weapon not firing if their target moves out of range while it is charging up.

Barracks
ARMOR: Structure
COST: 500
POWER USAGE: 25
PURPOSE: Trains infantry

Harsh training programs in the Barracks turns scores of worthless serfs and criminals into feared, expendable infantry.

Author's Note: Vital for access to infantry units.

Oh hey, this game. The disc version came with SecuROM DRM and it wouldn't let me install my collector's edition. EA helpfully directed tech issues to a phone number where a rep assured me that it was completely impossible for their DRM to give off a false positive so I must be a pirate! I must immediately delete my illegal files and refrain from downloading any more EA games, or legal action would follow!

And that's how I discovered that pirating games was a thing and the cracked version of RA3 actually worked, unlike the version I'd paid €70 for.

I'm with you on the Red Alerts. There's plenty of questionable stuff about it but most of the unit concepts are rock solid and extremely fun to play with. I also really like the bright graphics.

I'll also the first to state the obvious fact that Tim Curry hamming it up here is utterly glorious.

Genuinely surprised and clearly a representation of EAs internal structure because I remember having a problem with my Generals CD Key and was able to get a new one sent to my email iirc. The DRM on release was hilarious since there was a game-breaking bug on one of the Soviet missions which always crashed after doing a certain objective, making it impossible to finish the campaign.

The pirated version didn't have it.

2008 was right at the peak of the "pc gaming is DOOOOOMED because of piracy" circlejerk so they might've been adjusting their tech support line policy based on that.

I may be a fellow weirdo when it comes to C&C3 vs TibSun, but I can't agree with you on the Red Alerts I'm afraid. I love RA2 with all my heart.

RA3 does have a few things going for it of course, there's a lot of high profile talent here, even more than C&C3. (Though I prefer the acting in C&C3 on the whole.) Tim Curry is of course fantastic as can be expected, and Peter Stormare is lovely in the intro.

Also the main menu music absolutely slaps.

They were seriously pushing this game as an RTS for consoles after the uneven C&C3 consloe port. I think the unusually thorough tutorial is a product of that, a way to make very sure console players new to the genre knew how everything worked. This is also why units have exactly one special ability-ease of playing the game on controller with a dedicated special ability button.
