No, it's because it's a Sydney medal/trophy, we've only had this matchup for like three years, seems like it's a regular fixture now as the Swans like our traveling fans attending.

We've had plenty of great indigenous players, Syd Jackson would be fitting given his name.

I think a Freo player won it once, usually a Swan has, though.

I don't think it's nice, you laughing.
Its tough but Rankin ran a full three lengths of grass after bouncing the ball there. Theyre either 8 or 10ms wide, not entirely sure, but 24+meters is too far any day.

The Frankston player ended up in hospital, reported to have a broken cheekbone.

Intentional and severe. Gim him 8 weeks. Webster got 7, Parker deserves more for not learning from that. There is literally no reason for the bump. The ball had gone well past him, but he lined him up and left his feet to bump.

Would be fair enough if they actually called it when it happens instead of plucking that out of nowhere.

You regularly see players run further and not get pinged, including a Crows player just a few minutes earlier.

Had this discussion on Bigfooty (I know, I know...) already, but the umpires never actually pay that based on distance. They always pay it based on steps. Rankine took 14 steps after bouncing. And it's not like he's got giant strides or anything. That run would happen a dozen times every weekend and it never gets paid.

Think about the dinky little kicks that are regularly paid as marks, that distance is apparently 15m in an umpire's mind. Then picture the dozens of times each match that somebody runs further than that.

It was a bad call, but almost certainly didn't cost the Crows the match, and frankly they were only within touch in the first place because Collingwood were extremely wasteful with the ball. Two woefully out-of-form teams playing unaccountable, unskilled footy.

The real tragedy out of that match is Rankine doing his hamstring in the final play of the match. He's been exceptional the last few weeks, a human highlight reel. The competition is lesser for not getting to watch him for a while.

Richmond could be on for a few seasons like West Coast just had. After Baker and Martin leave they'll still have a few veterans but then there's a huge gap down to the kids.

In 2021 they drafted five players in the top 30. None of them in the top 20 for games played from that draft.

In 2022 and 2023 their draft picks were 49, 55, 40, 43. Their drafting and development would need to be impeccable to find more than just a few role players with that.

Luckily they've got a lot of draft picks this year.

He ran 24 metres, the fact that Crows fans can't accept a correct call is pretty funny.

Now that doesn't change the fact it seems you can run 30 metres out of the goal square after a behind, or 35 metres if you're Patrick Cripps.

Or that distance if you're pretty much any player in any game ever.

If something never gets paid, then paying it once isn't the correct decision.

Sometimes you see players um and ah on the spot for a while and then touch the ball on the ground, like they think it's time in possession rather than distance.

It's always one of those feel things - years of watching footy gives you the feel for it. Even then, players often run farther than we think they should and don't get called, and usually when it is called it feels absolutely right, like they get the benefit of the doubt until the point of ridiculousness.

So yeah, no doubt it was the "correct" call but given the chatter around it, it's surely an inconsistent call.

I don't think it's a rule/interpretation that needs changing since it's so rarely an issue, but because this is footy chat: I wonder if the rule really only needs to take forward movement into account. If accuracy were an issue it might be easier for an umpire to see where they last bounced on the ground versus how far down the ground they are now.
