Soviet 02: Circus of Treachery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzguelfQ7M0 Soviet 02: Circus of Treachery With Leningrad safe from naval invasion from the Baltics, it is time to head East and prevent Moscow from being encircled. The Rising Sun has taken control of Krasna-45 Maybe Mytischi or north of it, but I can't imagine they would be so calm with troops THAT close to Moscow so... Location: Near Moscow, Soviet Union Objective: Retake the Krasna-45 launch pad. Briefing: The Empire must be stopped. Use the Union's limited forces in Krasna-45 to rout the Imperial invaders. Your primary objective is to escort Natasha to the orbital launch facility, but keep on the lookout for Soviet POWs on your way. Proceed with caution, Commander! Author's note: I totally forgot about the bears, probably because I broke the scripting when I didn't jump in the right direction. This does not bode well... Name: General Nikolai Krukov Affiliation: USSR Occupation: Chief of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces (Formerly Lieutenant-General) Voiced/Played by: Andrew Divoff Troy McClure Moment: You might remember them for their performances in Toy Soldiers, Air Force One, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Lucky to find himself with Anatoly Cherdenko at the end of their rope in the prior timeline, Nikolai received a promotion upon their return from the post-Einstein calamity. His goals seem larger than simply Chief of General Staff, however. Name: Dasha Fedorovich Affiliation: USSR Occupation: Intelligence Officer Voiced/Played by: Ivana Miličević Troy McClure Moment: You might remember them for their performances in Casino Royale, Jerry Maguire, and Enemy of the State. Intelligence Officer for Generals of the Soviet Armed Forces and Premier Cherdenko. KDB-5 Sickle ARMOR: Light WEAPON: PKX 12.7mm Machine Guns (x3) COST: 900 ABILITY: Flea Jump Originally designed for riot suppression, this walking gun turret is still excellent for crowd control, and is capable of leaping obstacles in order to reach its objectives. Author's Note: Useful for disrupting infantry and surprise attacks, though vulnerable against anything but (non-antitank) infantry. Tesla Trooper ARMOR: Heavy Infantry WEAPON: Tesla Coilgun COST: 750 ABILITY: Electro-Magnetic Disruptors Enemies of the Soviet Union’s fear these elite mechanized patriots and their deadly tesla cannons. Their only vulnerability comes when they release a devastating EMP attack, rendering their foes—and themselves—temporarily helpless. Author's Note: They are surprisingly ineffective due to their weapon not firing if their target moves out of range while it is charging up. Personally I'm not a fan of sickles because I found them to be too fragile and their poorly placed peashooters aren't very effective and of course the game expects you to handle high apm jump micro to properly use them. You can use the attack this target command to the co-commander to make them snipe the exact unit you want.

Huh, I would've never assumed that considering how their commands always seem generic. Agreed with the Sickle. Interesting concept and design, but they are simply prone to exploding.

I can't help but wonder if the reason Krukov is so critical is because he's very insecure about his position due to only gaining it via time shenanigans. Or he knows who you were in the prior timeline, maybe you were his boss.

That's about how the mission usually goes. The fight at the ramp is incredibly rough on hard, and limping through the rest of the mission is common unless you are very good at micro.

Natasha definitely can swim so in this mission it's either an issue of the terrain or AI.

Yeah I mention later that she does swim as the camera pans to her - she just either took too much time walking to the experience crate or I mistook it as a problem with pathfinding (ie: she couldn't) Which, when I think about it, I should've just known that hero units would be able to swim because otherwise they are terrible heroes, but you know...

Yeah, I really need to quit posting before I'm done watching the video. Regarding the Empire's Hero unit appearing out of thin air, that might be worth remembering for later.

For some reason Moskvin always gives me a vibe like he's someone who just found the coat and is used to sleeping rough. Also lmao Dasha's face when Krukov starts talking about, uh, the nethers of Russia.

Oleg will go out for drinks with you, be a shoulder to lean on, and will enthusiastically host your wedding. Nikolai eats rats, showers in his clothes, and might secretly be three badgers.

IIRC one of the loading screen blurbs mentions that he was one of the first tesla troopers and is thought to have legit brain damage. Oleg is stated to have been a conscript who worked his way up the ranks.

Modern loading times make the loading screens hard to read unless you pause the video :P

That and I tend to skip over the briefings and loading screens in these videos to go right to the gameplay.

Also the youtube compression made the font look like absolute rear end. Ironically it's more readable on my phone.

Omigosh! How'd I miss the start of this!? I love how this game looks. I wonder if it'll turn out to be "not-that-great", because I generally have terrible taste with RTS games. Mostly because I'm never able to complete the campaign. I guess I have a bit of catching up to do.

Did I miss an announcement in the last thread? I had no idea this thread was up. Anyway, this is easily my favourite Red Alert game (I never liked the other C&C games), because it tried doing new things, like making water actual part of the map, or giving every unit a secondary ability for macro fiends. Shame about the balancing (lmao, Allies).

I am 50:50 about the mining changes in RA3 as compared to other C&C games. It is a departure from a signature mechanic, and change is scary But I think it is superior mechanics for competitive RTS, because it creates obvious focus for eco harassment and counterplay. The harvester cost vs durability vs per-trip income also feels right to make harassing the harvesters feel advantageous, but not immediately crippling.
