There's this thing in recent pop (and I mean the stuff you hear at fairgrounds and lovely local radio stations) where the hook from a well known song is just jammed in there wholesale and shamelessly.

Part of me gets that the history of folk, pop and blues derived music is full of that, and of course there was sampling, but that was mostly transformative and not in such a blatant "I don't have a good hook of my own" sense.

“Please stay”

“Oh god I hope I don’t lose you”

Like, it’s not even really lyrics, it’s just him saying exactly what he feels without any metaphor or word play or anything whatsoever. Just stating his thoughts and desires.

Well they're UK, so more conspiracy and nazi nuts. But whatever, they can be dickheads with bad beliefs, doesn't worry me. What does worry me is that they took Taylor Swift to court about her melody that is the same as I'm Too Sexy, and it is, it passes the musicologist test of looking the same on the page. But "My Girl", from 1965, has the same drat melody, so why are they getting any credit at all??

Kinda hooky if unimaginative Nu-Metal but with the hypersexed lyrical content of the Dirty South, it was all meant to be very tongue-in-cheek (take your pick of which and whose cheeks your tongue is in though) but not enough to shake a cringey fratboy vibe that has not aged well at all.

I played the hell out of Hot Pursuit 2 first and it blew my mind when I heard the real song.

I didn't know that was Dua Lipa, but yeah. I'm pretty sure the Whitetown song was built around a sample, but in a sense that there was some crate-digging and recontextualisation, where the Dua Lipa song just makes me think "lol, remember Whitetown? That was a catchy hook, huh?"

Yea, there's a lot of songs use samples and it's just there for a hook rather than actually being worked into the song.

Sometimes the sample is really awkward, like 3rd Bass's Pop Goes the Weasel uses the horn but from sledgehammer but it sounds super out of place, it's still considered a hip hop classic though.
