Grendels Dad posted:It's not about full frontal nudity, it's about nobody in movies or involved with movies seems to be horny anymore. I'm just reminded of the scene in Monkey Man where the guy takes his shirt off while training, to whistles and cheers from the women present. I've also said, I think it might be in part that Hollywood's mostly boomer ideas of sex and nudity have gotten so gross and called out as such enough that they gave up and stopped bothering rather than try to figure out how to portray sexuality without grossing people out.

It's probably a lot of complicated factors but it's still really funny and jarring to go back to an 80s/90s blockbuster like Top Gun or Risky Business or the Thomas Crown Affair (lol) and at the 65% mark there is ALWAYS a sex break. Complete with montage music that you can tell will go on the soundtrack just so Movies still follow formulas and patterns of a sort but it's wild how slavish it used to be

YggdrasilTM posted:50% of this year movies has sexual content? FIFTY?! What the hell! How?! Why?! It depends on how that’s defined. A kiss could qualify, for instance (don’t know if it does, but it might).

Nobody’s reading the full article because it’s behind a paywall but it goes on to state that nudity in movies has gone up while sexual content has gone down. It’s an extension of the Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny mindset.

Uncle Boogeyman posted:The bit where he’s pretending to be Dickie on the phone to Marge and she gets mad and says “I slept with Tom” and he has to stifle a laugh is easily my favorite Tom Ripley moment on film. Great movie. The ending drags it down a bit. It does thread the needle with making Ripley somewhat likeable better than Talented did. Mostly by making Greenleaf a huge rear end in a top hat and him and his set even more idly rich than later adaptations. The scene with him and Dickie playing cards while discussing Tom's potential murder and assumption of Dickie's life was excellent as was the signature copying scene. Delon shows the work put into the mimicry better than Damon did. His Ripley always felt a bit wunderkind.

Any time a movie spends depicting any form of physical intimacy could be better spent on deep lore and world building.

Damon's Ripley seemed like such a mope that I had a hard time seeing why Dickie would find him fun to spend time with. Delon's threaded that needle much better. think my Ripley ranking goes Delon > Malkovich > Hopper > Damon (although my actual ranking of the movies is probably The American Friend > Purple Noon > Ripley's Game > The Talented Mr. Ripley)

Pirate Jet posted:No, I don’t, come on dude. How is a sex scene “taking time away” from a film but a gruesome kill or a big fight scene or even a song and dance isn’t? It just depends on what the film is trying to do. Since films have a very finite amount of time, I can see why why using any of that time for sex when it doesn’t really need it can be frustrating. I love Predator 2 and that film has a exploration feel to it so that’s probably the reason for the sex scene, but aside from that it’s really pointless. Not that it bothers me much. But ya know. People seem hella sensitive to sex these days.

From the start I didn’t say me I said people. I don’t fully get why people are so weird about sex scenes these days. They say it’s boring pointless, makes them uncomfortable, they watch in front of their families ect. It’s all wonk. Do whatever you want filmmakers imo

Pirate Jet posted:No, I don’t, come on dude. How is a sex scene “taking time away” from a film but a gruesome kill or a big fight scene or even a song and dance isn’t? The things is, all of these things are often overindulgent time wasters in movies. Big fight scenes and musical numbers are often especially egregious offenders, but I'd also put a lot of gratuitous sex scenes in that same category. Just like checking out of a blockbuster when a fight scene goes on and on without conveying something new, an unnecessary sex scene can do the same. Of course, when done well they're also all powerful emotional cinematic tools. There's nothing inherently wrong with a sex scene, but there were a ton of movies in previous decades, especially the 80s and 90s, where the story more or less gets put on pause for a boring softcore porn break. I definitely want movies to be hornier, but having a sex scene doesn't necessarily make a movie horny if that scene feels rote and forced. feedmyleg fucked around with this message at 15:22 on May 3, 2024 |

here's the thing though: all movies are a waste of time, so complaining about a movie wasting time just means you aren't really about that movie enjoying life

Because sex is part of life, any art that's honest about humanity is going to include it, and the continued elimination of sexual content in the arts mostly serves right-wing puritanical values aided by a misguided notion that Hollywood has "lost the right" to sexual content post-MeToo - which, again, isn't even being served because as the article states, there's more nudity than ever but no actual sex, so it's not like actresses stopped getting exploited. We're not even talking about specifically sex scenes here, we're talking sexual content - an entire aspect of human life being shut out of the plots and characterization of movies because at some point somebody watched a movie with their dad.feedmyleg posted:Of course, when done well they're also all powerful emotional cinematic tools. Why do we need scenes at all? Don’t even make movies anymore just go straight to making the YouTube videos explaining the movies you were going to make. Cut out the middle man and stop wasting everyone’s time.

Back when The Room was starting to reach the ironic audience a friend of mine tried to show a bunch people at school it on a school computer. He wasn't very articulate so he couldn't really explain what the movie was without showing clips He downloaded the entire movie and was trying to find one of the iconic scenes but no matter where he jumped on the timeline he landed on sex scene. One girl eventually asked "why are you showing us porno?" and then everyone dispersed very awkwardly.

As someone who often deals with censorship demands from various countries - sexual stuff gets censored by governments all the time. Violence does not. There are certain countries that will literally cut out if people are kissing. Kiss and cursing get cut. Someone getting cut in half with a battleaxe does not get touched. I would venture to guess that has an influence on things.

Mordiceius posted:As someone who often deals with censorship demands from various countries - sexual stuff gets censored by governments all the time. Violence does not. This is particularly funny in big Indian productions where the protagonists are SO IN LOVE, a love that burns unfathomably hot and passionately, yet if they kiss at all it's like a gentle peck. Those same movies will just have old people getting punched in the face and surprising amounts of blood.
