Day 100 :toot:

The task force drops in with minimal scatter well away from Allas V, forming up in good order and rushing toward the cold immensity of the gas giant. If the Imperials have detected the incursion, they have not reacted with a challenge, but given the nature of the installation, they likely wouldn’t.

X-Wings and ARC-170s pour it on, outdistancing the rest of the force as the ringed planet looms larger in their canopies. Ahead of the ships, the starfighters will have to rely on their own sensors. A bare few light-seconds from Allas Vg, there’s contact: indistinct at first, but definitely a big, fat wedge. And then three smaller contacts. And then the sky is filled with smaller stars that move as the Imperial fighters swarm outward.

Iceberg Squadron makes first contact, with a group of Starwings far enough out that they must have been on local patrol. S-foils spread wide as the formations loosen up for the merge. Iceberg 4 takes first blood on the joust, missiling a gunboat who was about to do the same to them—but Iceberg 5 eats the return fire as the two groups of ships fall upon each other in a swirl of red and green bolts. Azure and Hookbat join the fray, smashing four more Starwings, though Iceberg is suddenly down three more X-Wings. There are more Imperials arriving from the edge of the fight, more gunboats and the first TIEs now.

Iceberg 10 successfully disengages her crippled X-wing from the fight and aims the battered, leaking fighter towards the approaching task force to attempt an emergency recovery rather than trust what’s left of the hyperdrive. A pair of TIEs catch Hookbat 4 unawares and batter the hapless X-Wing apart before wingmen can intervene.

Abruptly, the fight becomes a running one as the Starwings all move to disengage back towards their base and ships. The X-wings are fast enough to keep up, but the ARCs can only follow in the hope of re-engaging. The one squadron of TIEs harass the harassers in an attempt to cover their retreat, but three more gunboats are lost in exchange for Hookbat 9.

As the little forest moon grows subjectively larger than its vast ringed parent, it’s possible to identify the Imperial ships by type: a Victory and three Gozantis. Outgoing transmissions have been intercepted, and though encrypted, it’s highly likely that the Victory’s sensor set has picked out the approaching ships of Frigate Command and has sent out the call.

DECISION POINT:
The existing matchup is a near-run fight; it’ll be an ugly brawl, but there’s a decent shot at killing the Victory or damaging so badly it has to be sent out-sector for repairs. If any other heavy ships drop in on you—and outside the protection of the star’s gravity well, they could possibly drop right on you—that will no longer be winnable. Frigate Command is not yet inside the gas giant’s hyper limit. This will be the last time to get cleanly away.

Press on? Pull out?

Tough decision. We've got a lot on the line here if things go badly or the Imperial response is faster than anticipated, but catching a Victory-II more or less on it's own is a rare prize. If it's Temerit and we take it out that removes an Imperial Admiral from play.

Press On.

Yeah, best case scenario I think is going to be a River Plate type victory. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_River_Plate

TL;DR - one heavy ship crippled by several lighter ones, forced to scuttle to prevent capture.

Edit: the Y-wings are cleared to attack the Victory II. I'd prefer to save those bombs for the base but big Vicky there is a higher priority target.

Day 100 (cont'd)

The survivors of the Battle of Rula are not about to re-make the mistake of charging into an unsupported dogfight inside a Star Destroyer’s flak zone. The Imperials are disinclined to commit to any odds other than the best they can get, and want to provoke an action before the Rebel ships arrive, but they’re also ball-and-chained to the moon. So there’s a complex dance of both sides attempting to bait each other out of position as Frigate Command grinds onward. Aside from dramatic spatters of long-range laser cannon fire, this consumes several minutes and produces nothing but sweat.

Chronometers have been started, with countdowns since the force hypered in, first contact, and the hyper limit for Allas V was crossed. Another set of clocks are started: flashes of hyperspace emergence are detected, range estimated at 75 light-seconds. Arrival times are calculated for that distance for several speeds. The one for TIEs is counting down fastest—they’ll be in the fight in fifteen minutes if they launched the instant their hypothetical mothership jumped in. If it’s a fast ship like an Acclamator/Meridian, it’ll be in weapon range in 25 minutes. If it’s the other Victory, it’ll be just over a half-hour. Nervous crewmen are calling out these times in Windborne’s flag plot in a confusing but necessary cacophony.

Nightbloom fires first, salvoing concussion missiles at maximum range to spark off of the Victory’s deflectors. The Imperials sit and take it, the first long-range counterfire starting to jostle the frigates as the range winds down; Brass, Rathtar, and Poison peel off and approach Allas V g from another direction, effectively removing themselves from the fight as they are not pursued.

One of the countdowns reaches zero: the extra wave of TIEs, if coming, can appear any moment now. As space between the groups of ships narrows, filling with turbolaser bolts, the fighters fall upon each other and it becomes difficult to sort out exactly who’s engaging what.

The little Gozantis attempt to screen the Star Destroyer, but this is patently futile, even before Volcano Squadron vaporizes one in a single pass. Point defenses on both sides have gone fully to local control, shooting into the starfighter melee with desperate disregard for both Imperial and Alliance doctrine.

Queen’s Ransom attracts a little too much attention to itself, and attracts a full alpha strike from the Victory, leaving it a gutted, ionized wreck. Her surviving command crew attempt to maneuver clear, and report they can still hyper out, if necessary, but will be a long time getting to the hyper limit of the gas giant.

Windborne and Synox Cocktail both have their deflectors blown down. The big Imperial ship’s shields begin to flicker as well when Volcano swoops in and delivers their torpedoes, scoring several hits.

The Y-Wing squadrons are crisscrossing the forest moon’s surface at low altitude—even with subtracting the places where they know Clandestine Base isn’t, based on Commando Team 10’s reports, there is still a lot of real estate to search.

Bad news from the sensor operators as more contacts are detected close astern—eight TIE fighters, streaking into the frigate formation, home right in on the obviously-in-trouble Queen’s Ransom and tear into her, more fires blooming under the stitch of laser cannon hits. The crew take to lifepods as the conflagration erupts out of control. Despite counterfire, the newcomeer TIEs get away clean to join the dogfight.

Brass Leader calls in a contact planetside, and all three squadrons swiftly converge to fell a suspicious canyon with proton bombs. It’s unclear what the extent of damage is, as they don’t stick around for BDA but immediately begin climbing out of atmosphere to join the fight,

The Victory is struggling to re-establish deflectors, and its armor is badly rent, but Windborne and Synox Cocktail are getting shot up too, and none of the starfighters have munitions left, and another large ship is now visible at maximum sensor range. It’s a Meridian, almost certainly Apex, and more hyperspace exits are flickering on the scopes in all directions.

After hastily conducting as much search and rescue as possible, the task force quits the scene at best speed ahead of the new threat. [some of the fighters have some misjump incidents, but nothing fatal]

Squadron Reorganization

Iceberg to be merged with Hookbat and Azure resulting in two squadrons of 11 fighters. Order reinforcements for Hookbat and Azure.

Bite the bullet and order full reinforcements for Checkmate and Dawn. The probable loss of grade sucks but they're both nearly down to half strength.

Consideration for next month's budget: How to replace Queen's Ransom? I'm inclined to get another Marauder missile frigate to boost our long range firepower.

Post Battle Analysis:

What worked? Frigate Squadron as a unit was able to survive contact with a much heavier force. Until we have cruiser-weight vessels of our own that's about the best we can expect. The loss of Queen's Ransom is a blow, but the cold calculus of war is that she was the blow we could afford to take. Our X-wings, although they took heavy losses, were able to secure space superiority for the ARCs and Y-wings to operate and do heavy damage (or possibly destroy) their targets.

What didn't work? We weren't able to secure the destruction of Temerit or rescue Commando Team 10. We had to leave the field before confirming the destruction of Clandestine Base. Our early warning systems failed to pick up the TIE strike that finished off Queen's Ransom in time for Neon Squadron to intercept them.

Lessons for us: Higher mix of space superiority fighters to strike fighters. More interceptors. Focus fire on strike targets. Do Not Engage Star Destroyers without overwhelming numerical superiority!

Lessons for them: Don't send capital ships out on their own. (an escort of Gozanti carriers and a single squadron of TIE's isn't going to cut it). The Rebel Fleet might be a distraction or feint for a fighter strike or other ploy. Tighten up security around 'secret' facilities!

edit: I think we have confirmed kills of 32 Assault Gunboats now? Possibly a couple more in the battles at Kidria and Rula. As far as we know they only had three squadrons in sector so that's pretty good.

Your various eyeballs on Hypori note the arrival of Temerit at the base with the machine shop, making something of a stir as the 900-meter-long bulk of it comes down, covering the base like a roof. Visual assessment of damage is hard to hide, but only the externals are visible: the sensor masts and domes are visibly damaged, and it seems likely that multiple weapon mounts must be offline as well.

We have an intel ship, commandos on the ground, and a growing insurrection full of friendly eyes so we should know something, although I expect it won't be a complete picture. Day 104

High Hat and Shepherd Squadrons blast through Kidria unopposed--apparently the Empire is not ready to re-establish an orbital garrison yet. Eyeballing the scattered and sporadic insurgency on the ground would require enduring a lot of ground fire for quite a long exposure, and after exchanging shots with some patrol airspeeder gunships to no effect, haul it in home.

Azure Squadron has an X-Wing down with a bad maintenance gripe, techs are tiger-teaming it, trying to get it operational again.

Day 106
Three squadrons of TIE fighters are delivered to the Hypori ICM; two are transhipped immediately to bases planetside, but the third disappears to parts unknown (presumably in-system, since no Gozantis were observed leaving with them).

Day 107
Incinerator jumps in to the Kote system in company with a Xytiar-class freighter, bearing in its hold the crated starfighters of Acid Squadron. Though the crews scarcely bat an eye (or other species-appropriate response) during their initial briefing when it is mentioned that Infinity Base's location is already compromised, there is an undercurrent of tension that the base personnel have, by this point, just sublimated as normal.

Windborne completes her repairs and is put back on flight status. Some very stricken-looking ground crews fear the malfunctioning X-Wing may be cursed somehow, as it has evaded all attempts to repair it; options are being weighed as to how much re-purposed machinery could be used, and if it worked, who'd volunteer to fly it. (Needlessly, as there are several volunteers)

The conflict on Kidria enters an entirely new phase as flights of Sentinels and Gozantis make planetfall and start disgorging stormtroopers and support troops. Your groundside observers don't have a consistent count yet, but it's at least 50 companies' worth. Their armor, noticeably shinier and less worn than the forces that have been stuck here since the attack on the orbital fortifications, immediately make their presence known. Aggressive counter-insurgency and a further tightening of martial law immediately begins to have an effect on the uprisings.

Crest, detailed to run them down, fail to catch up before they hyper out (still somewhat inside the limit, so clearly they had no interest in sticking around and fighting it out). Sphaerolana has more but smaller weapons than Tyrannicide, evenly split between turbolaser and ion cannon batteries, and its antistarfighter battery is comparable to the Dreadnought's, as well. No long-range sensors, a decent but not spectacular datalink, and a pretty powerful tractor beam.

One of the ways rebellions succeed is by being an alternative government. If there's a drug cartel setting up shop hoping to take advantage of the Imperial security forces being distracted and we get a chance to take them down, we should do it.

An alternative possibility is the 'spice' is code for insurgent activity. We should keep an eye out for a local movement that might need support.

OK! Follow up question, cost to bring Margin base up to spec?

I am willing to back this expansion, but i would like us to spend the rest of the money on the ship tonnage to industrialize our transport thefts. my esteemed comrade suggests we can afford two frigates along with that fancy dancy cruiser, so we should buy those, and generally keep stealing all the transports.

To confirm, those requistion requests are:
  • SC-67X Sphaerolana 2469cr
  • 2 x Nebulon-B Frigate 2612cr
  • Margin base capability upgrade 2900cr
7,981cr all up. Leaves us a bit tight for next month (1362cr) but should be survivable, especially if we can catch some prizes.

Speaking of, High Hat, Shepherd, and Crest squadrons are being deployed to Amphest system for commerce raiding. Equip ion torpedoes and take 3 U-wing shuttles with boarding crews. Good hunting, see you in 6 days.

To note Madurai's point of order in thread, 3363 is the cost of margin bases expansion, with the event premium. still doable!!

Day 124

The Pana raiders hit paydirt, or at least… pay containers? With a small group of Imperial transports traveling in company with some civil freighters. The instant Neon does a close flyby on them, they start squalling on emergency channels, and scatter right off without waiting on a response. All but one are caught in short order--one of the Imperials take to lifepods and blows their ship up rather than just scrubbing their computers, so there will be some topics of conversation for the interrogators. The civilian hulls aren't just charters, but have Imperial crews on board.

The haul:
Retrocyclic 84 [Class IV container transport]
Brentaal 351 [Eta-class barge]
Achiever [Action-VI-class freighter]
Chalacta Pilgrim [Xytiar-class freighter]

The one that self-destructed was another Eta, ID'ed retroactively as Kessel 1286.

Curiously, some of the officer prisoners are wearing unfamiliar uniforms--drab green instead of the traditional Navy gray. It's new issue that is only now making its way into Imp forces in sector.

Well, that operation paid for itself.

The Achiever is a beefy prize, if my memory is correct.
