I am somewhat hoping to reduce their space dock capacity. Those would likely be the bits to be well defended though.

do the space stations function as space docks? When Temerit needed repairs it was docked planetside, then got sent out of the sector iirc.

There's one Imperial repair facility in-sector (that you know of) and it's planetside on Hypori.

OK, Hypori is the hardest of hard targets so getting an orbital bombardment on the repair facility would be difficult without some kind of intel coup.

If we want to hit orbitals with a fighter raid the same way we hit Kidria for my money the best target is Greater Pana, with a single XQ2 station and 2 laser sats.

If we want to try and knock out a couple of big ships we could try an attack at Kala, but I'd like to know what the other ship there is. (can ALMANAC provide any intel on that, Madurai?)

If we want to support the uprising on Kidria we could use Frigate Command to set up a blockade and escort transports to and from the planet, I'm pretty sure the Imperial space presence there is limited at the moment.

One thing we should consider about Sphaerolana is that the Imps probably don't have any idea she's been converted to a warship. That surprise could be a valuable asset.

I'd suggest we follow up on Kidria. Some minor bombing might have given a morale boost to the insurgents, but if we want to secure their long-term loyalty we'll need to committ more fully.

ALMANAC hasn't reported appearances of anything bigger than shuttles, at least within visual range of the main belt mining station.

Hey, before I start doing detailed planning, what happened with the reinforcements for Hookbat, Azure, Checkmate, and Dawn squadrons? Did the squadrons lose status?

I agree, but we don't have the forces to wage a ground war on that scale. Come next month we should have the money to start turning their insurgents into regular forces, if we can keep a supply line open long enough to land the equipment.

We do have enough ships now that we can walk and chew gum at the same time, though.

Operation WALK:
Fighter squadrons from RADDUS attack orbital facilities and targets of opportunity at Greater Pana, PANA system.
Field Command: TBA
Strike Squadrons: ARC-170 High Hat, Shepherd, Crest; BTL-A4 Dart, Fortune, Hound, Racer.
Escort Squadrons: T-65B Silver, Checkmate, Umber.

Same basic plan as the Kidria attack, hopefully not being followed up by a desperate scramble to defend our own base immediately afterwards. Form up pre-jump at a secondary location, go straight for the orbitals and turn them into a decorative lightshow for the good citizens below. Remaining ordnance to be expended on Imperial-flagged shipping or the planetary defense center. We have previously (144 days ago lol) sighted an Arquitens in Pana orbit, if it or any other warship is in residence it goes to the top of the priority list but otherwise the plan remains the same. Both inhabited moons of Pana are 19LM inside the jump radius of the local star so make sure to get out before enemy reinforcements catch you in the gravity well.

Operation CHEW GUM:
FRIGATE COMMAND escorted by fighters from INFINITY make a display at KALA system, attempting to draw Imperial ships into an uneven fight.
Field Command: TBA
Fleet Units: Windborne, Double Eagle, Honorbound, Synox Cocktail, Skyhook, Taana Overdrive, Nightbloom.
Escort Squadrons: T-65B Azure, Hookbat, Acid; R-22 Neon.
Standby units: CORVETTE COMMAND.

Frigate Command and escorts to form up and jump from a secondary location. On arrival in Kala head to Ugdug Home - ALAMANAC hasn't had a visual on any Imperial ships at Orgol’s Girdle, so presumably they're further in at the more heavily populated world. Once close to the planet find and engage enemy ships (most recent estimate is 2 light capital ships) and destroy them. If they don't come out to play attack targets of opportunity: Imperial flagged orbitals and shipping, etc. Ugdug Home is well outside the 35LS gravity well of the local star, so getting surprise on the Imperials will be essential to stop them cutting and running when they realize they're outgunned. Conversely if we're outgunned, getting away should be a breeze.

Sounds good. When it comes to the blockade of Kidria have we thought of what the goals for that will be, and how long we expect to be able to maintain it? To my mind any blockade we could set up currently likely won't damage the planet's economy enough to actually be worth the risk on its own. Rather than a full blockade we should think of taxing civilian shipping onto and off the planet at a rate below Imperial customs and divert the spoils directly back into the insurgency. Perhaps waive the tax for any merchants who are willing to work with the insurgency once we leave.

I hadn't thought of the blockade in economic terms, just preventing Imperial supplies from coming in and protecting our own. The idea of a 'rebel tax' is an appealing one, though.

Day 145

The Pana strike group forms up in good order for the long transit in from the hyper limit, seventy-nine sleek shapes glinting in multiple echelon formations sweeping in on the unsuspecting Imperials.
Meanwhile, on the ground, a spotter report from STUDENT has noted the arrival of two Imperial ships at the orbital fighter platform — a light cruiser and a Gozanti transport have docked there. Commando Team Seven, alerted, confirms the sighting.
Stiffer odds than was planned for, but nothing the strike couldn’t handle, and the mission goes on.

Tense hours later, and the leading Rebel fighters must surely be on Imperial sensors, yet the only reaction seems to be sirens from the Greater Pana PDC—nothing is moving in orbit, and no defending starfighters have been launched. The Gozanti undocks, followed half a minute later by the Arquitens, and they maneuver in the close vacinity of the station. Still, no fighters emerge from the platform, and the laser sats co-orbiting with it do not seem to be switched on.
With no challenge to space superiority, the X-wings apply themselves to flak suppression, taking out both dormant laser sats and dropping a desultory volley of proton torpedoes onto the PDC, gutting it in a satisfying rumble of secondary fireballs.
High Hat squadron diverts away to Lesser Pana long enough to flatten their small planetary base, as well.

Gunners aboard the two ships are awake, and bag an X-and Y-wing before both are buried in an avalanche of torpedoes from the attack squadrons. Blasts erupt on the orbital station, deflectors flaring but not collapsing.
Finally, someone on the station has gotten things happening, and all the turbolaser and laser cannon turrets start belatedly filling then sky with green as Imperial fighters throw themselves out into the fight.
The planetary garrison V-wing squadron has been augmented by a squadron of TIEs, and one of the new TIE Brutes. The X-Wings abandon their secondary targets and burn hard after their new opponents, already mixing it up with the bombers.

The TIE Brutes, with their large size and heavy firepower, attract a disproportionate amount of attention from the attackers, managing to divert some of the attackers from their runs against the station. The elderly V-wings acquit themselves well, despite the lopsided odds and their overall lack of firepower.

Thw XQ station takes minutes of pounding to finally lower its shields, all the while its guns were working the swarm around it, but fall they eventually do. The remaining Imperial fighters, unable to escape, fight to the bitter last. In the end, the stars shine only on expanding clouds of debris, and victorious Alliance squadrons.

Day 145 (continued)

Staging from the uninhabited Yakkis system, Windborne collects her charges for the jump to Kala. Corvette Command (minus Nightbloom) also gathers here, ready for the call.

At the appointed hour, levers are pushed forward, and the strike force blurs into hyperspace for the scant few minutes of transit. Kala’s wan red light barely reflects off the hulls of the frigates as they close the distance to the current position of Ugdug, a middling-sized ice giant. There are no spaceborne contacts on the way in: civilian, mining guild, or otherwise. Closing on the inner reaches of Ugdug’s moons, there’s not even shuttle traffic above Ugdug Home’s spaceport. No comms traffic either—all is quiet on all frequencies.

Clearly, ALMANAC’s report is dated or otherwise incorrect as regards Imperial movements. Once within tactical range of the moon, there is a single coded transmission, and then a surrender offer from SC3771, a Gozanti transport grounded at the civil spaceport.

NOTE: though outside the star’s hyper limit, detecting anything further will require entering the planet’s limit.

Proceed?

Day 145 (continued)

Nothing else is moving within the limits of the frigates’ sensors, but there’s another problem: though the Imperial ship has transmitted its surrender, it doesn’t seem inclined to lift off and deliver itself to you, and there is no further comms from it. There’s no word from the Imperial garrison, either.

Neon Squadron takes a low atmospheric pass to confirm that, yes, the ship does exist, and is where they said it was. Windborne details a prize crew and dispatches them in a GX-1 to take possession as the squadron holds in close orbit, weapons trained both down the well and up waiting for trouble.

Trouble manifests itself almost immediately in the form of fast-moving contacts arrowing in towards Ugdug Home—and moments later, three much larger contacts further out. The (estimated) two squadrons of starfighters will be in range in a few minutes, the big ones—moving faster than anything in the taskgroup—in a few after that.

Decision point

1 Immediate emergency hyper—there will be a risk of misjump

2 Fight your way to the hyper limit and jump

3 Stand and fight it out, with or without reinforcements (if Corvette Command jumps now, there will still be a delay in motoring from their emergence point to the battle, which depending on how accurate their nav is, could be 15 minutes to 6 hours (it’s a bell curve)

4 Some other diabolical plan

It’s too late to hide—if you can see them, they can definitely see you.

2 We're still guerrillas. We should never take a fight we don't know we're going to win if we don't have to. But we should still attempt to retreat in good order.

If some daring pilot were to try to get a good look at the large contacts though so we could determine if we should just regroup and immediately charge back in, I'm sure they'd get a nice piece of tin to pin to their chest.

Agreed. Neon Squadron's R-22s are probably our best candidates for a fast pass.

Day 145(continued)

Neon Squadron hauls around and accelerates back down the threat vector as the frigates run up the gravity well. They manage to avoid the incoming TIEs, who do not try very hard to intercept them. The heavy ships quickly resolve themselves as two Acclamator-class and one Meridian-class traveling in tight wedge formation. Wary of tempting fate from the fearsome amount of flak these ships have shown the ability to put up, Neon Leader declines to close the range close enough to ID the hulls precisely.

Likewise, the TIE groups don't seem interested in pressing the attack too far in the face of 2:1 fighter odds and the massed firepower of the Rebel task force.

At the current rate of closure, the Imperials will not catch up before the hyper limit is crossed.

I'm noice, therefore I am.
Grimey Drawer
Alliance High Command have ordered Major Vask Sofin, Agent Analyst, to assist in the liberation of the Ferra Sector.

With a reputation for a vicious streak beneath his jovial demeanour, this Bothan spy has seen much success in other theatres, assisting in the gathering of critical intelligence, and the planning of several decisive and overwhelming strikes against weakened Empire targets.

Without stepping on any toes, I humbly suggest we rethink our current strategies. This sector has seen a number of pitched battles against Imperial forces that have ended with no gains and a return to the status quo.

The Imperials can more readily reinforce their losses - we need to think more like a guerrilla force again. We need to get them off balance or influence the disposition of their forces before making surgical strikes.

Proposal: firstly, we need to exfiltrate our courageous commando forces on Bundil before they are captured or killed.

Proposal: we should consider JALTTTENE as a potential target. With a low number of Imperial forces on planet, we could easily forment rebellion, with the goal of potentially taking the planet entire, or drawing forces from elsewhere in the Bundil system that attempt to reinforce in a trap, or use the distraction as an opportunity to perform sabotage. Suggestions welcomed.

Lastly: a focus on more robust contacts on planet and intelligence networks. We unfortunately let a severe breach in Imperial networks go unused in time. We should look to make more such opportunities and potentially exploit them simultaneously to force them into a position of our choosing. More contacts + commandos + focusing our intelligence ship capacities?
