I'm laughing but I shouldn't be because I love Liverpool and that meme could be about the men's team this year.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
A-League Women wrapped up here in Australia yesterday, with Sydney FC claiming a second consecutive title.

Complete smash & grab win in the grand final - Sydney had 30% possession, 2 shots on target, 1 goal. San Diego Wave's Shae Connors scored the winner with her first Sydney FC goal; basically a perfect counter-attack and a peach of an assist from 16 year-old Indiana dos Santos.

I really want the sport to get to the point where your journeyman players earn enough to not have to play in multiple league seasons a year. It would hurt the A-League and NWSL most since they share a lot of players, but the injury risks are just so much higher if you don't have an off-season where you can recover. And one way to mitigate/reduce ACL injuries is to have a few months a year where you're not playing or even practicing at full tilt so your body can recover. It's like UCL injuries among pitchers in baseball, they just get so overworked growing up and then it's a career altering injury right when a player should be in their prime.

I don't think European footballers do this. Is there really so much crossover between the US and Australian leagues?

The Women's A-League schedule takes place over a perfect timeframe for NWSL players to leave right after the US season ends, play in Australia, and then go back to the US either as the season is starting, or shortly after it starts if the team they're playing on makes the A-League Final.

They're just bog standard loans with a very fixed duration AFAICT.

Can’t speak for other A-League clubs, but one of our centrebacks (Jordan Thompson) also plays for Washington Spirit, though she’s currently listed as “inactive” on their website.

Emily van Egmond is another who’s played for San Diego and Orlando, and done guest/loan stints back at her home A-League club.

there’s a bunch of others too, though I can’t recall any offhand.

I think it clashes with most European leagues, like the wiki list for foreign players in the A-league is between 5-15 for most nations before you hit the US section: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/List_of_foreign_A-League_Women_players

I kinda thought the Norwegian section would be larger, since Toppserien runs counter to most European leagues and starts in March and finishes in November, making it almost perfectly suited for A-League play. But I think the rise of the WSL had a lot of players move there for a decent wage, instead of doing a double stint in Australia and risking a stress/fatigue injury.

Yeah, it almost certainly helps players who play in both leagues that Australia and the US are both anglophone countries which share a decent amount of culture. Though it's not at all unheard of for American or Caribbean baseball players to play in Japan or Korea, so part of it is just "I get to play this sport and get a paycheck for it."

It's the final day of the WSL:

And here's the table:

Bristol are going down as they were so bad that they managed to save notoriously awful West Ham from relegation. Crystal Palace have secured promotion from WSL2. Biggest surprise of the season were Liverpool. They got relegated in 2020 and the women's team were in complete shambles but they are really solid nowadays.

Also people are accusing the NWSL of using AI to compile match highlights because they're getting worse.
