That game was incredibly horny for a turn-based game where characters stood still a lot. Just perfectly stationary character models with tits that would jump up or down by themselves for no discernable reason, like spring-powered balls trying to escape. Sometimes I think about the guy that programmed them, and I still get slightly worried...

One of my closest friends made a bit of money a while ago writing a porn book and self-publishing on Kindle. It was about a dick that comes alive and goes off by itself and has adventures. She used the pen name 'Slip Rhee'. Not really relevant but the post about the weirdly independent boobs reminded me of it

Again with the lovely subtitles. Last time time it was with Killers of the Flower Moon where it could be argued you're not supposed to understand the native American language because because the white characters don't, but now I'm watching a movie where there's extended dialogue in a fictional language and you're definitely supposed to understand those conversations. So I've got two options: either English subtitles for the fictional language but not for the English spoken parts, or SDH for the English parts but for some loving reason not the fictional parts because gently caress deaf people? Had to hunt down proper subs made by an unofficial third party. (Also my go-to site for those closed down which sucks.) Also, isn't it about time for English non-SDH subs without the [door creaks] and [dramatic music rises] bits? I'm not deaf, English just isn't my first language and I have pretty bad ADHD so subs make for a more relaxed viewing expierence and using my own language's is a crap shoot and more often than not is shittily translated and even at best of times loses a lot in translation.

More What We Do in the Shadows grumbles related to this: on the BBC they subtitle any Spanish-speaking into English, but on Disney Plus they put [SPEAKING IN SPANISH] whenever Guillermo is speaking to his family. I'd rather they put the drat Spanish words up at least then I could guess.

It's always annoying when American shows expect everyone to be at least passing in Spanish. I live about a looong way from the nearest Spanish speaking country. Theoretically, the Phillipines is a Spanish speaking country, but that's less than 0.5% of the population. Next would be Ecuador which is 15,000km away.

A few shows have jokes about that to the point of My Name Is Earl having a full on easter egg in a rant in Spanish being actually a shout-out to Spanish speaking audiences.

I don't actually mind Spanish being unsubtitled in the non-subtitled version of the show. Usually the showrunners will make sure you can get by without understanding. Shadows is fine with that.

It's so weird to me that subtitles always seem like an afterthought, especially with huge Hollywood blockbusters where the costs would be a drop in a bucket. A movie with a budget in the hundreds of millions shouldn't mind spending a couple of grand to make sure the subs are up to par with the rest of production, considering it's a big part of the experience for huge segment of the audience. Especially when the subs are for the language spoken. You don't even have to do any fancy translations (which can be difficult and expensive, especially when there's a lot of non-literal language like idioms, jokes, cultural references etc), all you need to do is have what's spoken be transcribed.

Pretty much all major media companies have had completely hosed priorities for a long while now, and subtitles are rock bottom in the priority list for a number of reasons resulting from that.

It must be right down there alongside good audio mixing. Not everyone has 5.1/7.1 audio setups. Especially infuriating when it comes to anime. Series originally broadcast with 2.0 audio where voices are the loudest thing? Let's dub it in 5.1 audio with vocals being punted off to speakers that aren't on every TV, and have the music or sound effects play on the speakers that are on every TV instead!

If I remember correctly The typical 5.1 mix for tv is putting all dialog from on-screen characters and foley for on-screen actions in the center channel and saving the 4 side channels for music.

FreudianSlippers posted:Did spending a few decades as a colony of the US really have more of a linguistic impact than spending 300 years as a Spanish colony? Short answer… yes. Taft implemented a more robust education system and to this day ESL is as common in Filipino schools as Spanish is here in the US. There's a reason the stereotype that Filipinos make up a majority of international ship crews is because like aviation, English is the standard language in maritime operations.

There was a time in the aughts into the teens where reality shows in the US would have subtitles for people clearly speaking English but with a foreign accent, but then nothing for mush-mouthed Americans when it would actually be useful.

I've seen a few of those. Years ago I saw some US news show subtitle a British reporter who was talking about some bullshit the royal family was getting up to. Naturally he was using received pronunciation, i.e. the most posh accent, but the US show was subtitling him and it was just bizarre. Like, it's literally the poshest accent in the world, not some scouser from a council estate. Megillah Gorilla has a new favorite as of 14:01 on May 7, 2024 |
