But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

The Plains of Raami aren’t anything special. Little more than a collection of villages and ancient forts, this pastoral valley has nevertheless seen its share of Archon activity over the centuries. There’s just… something about the place. More Archons are born here than anywhere else - as many as two a year when the Count falls after a particularly wretched war. But even those strange to this land feel a pull… and when too many are pulled, sparks begin to fly!

”ARALKESTI ARCHON CREATION” posted:

Welcome to Contest: The Plains of Raami! This is a tactical game where you punch guys and claim territory before they can take it from you! Also: this game makes extremely heavy use of Fire Emblem GBA sprites and assets. Sue me. But don’t, actually, sue me, please. This is a playtest for a larger run of this game, so let’s go ahead and try to break stuff!

To start, make a character. Pick a name (eight characters max!) and a portrait from this list.

You can also make your own using this program with this palette:
    Metal H 279 S 34 V 26
    Trim H 155 S 45 V 62
    Cloth H 0 S 0 V 63
    Leather H 24 S 21 V 64
Each character has 5 HP and 6 Move as a baseline: unless you have something that explicitly modifies these, assume that's what you're working with! Now, being a playtest set chronologically before the main game, no one is going to DIE here - but you might take wounds that will carry over visually into the next game! Next, set up your Stats. Each Archon has three Stats: ▣ GRIT, ◈ REFLEX, and ◉ WILL. Allocate d4, d6, and d8 between them - they are used for both attack and defense. Broadly, you roll one of your stats against the static Target Number of your opponent’s stats. The TN is half the die value (d4=2, d6=3, d8=4), and your Archon must roll higher than that value to hit. A tie isn’t good enough! As for targeting these stats, that is tied to the weapon chosen for the attack. An example of a weapon card can be seen below:

”RULES AND ACTIONS” posted:

In Contest, players give their Archons instructions, but do not roll. It seems strange, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to manage if I’m doing the heavy lifting. In general, you will do two things on your turn: Move, and Act. In that order! You can opt out of either, but you can’t switch em’ up. A few Actions:
  • Attack! Choose a target and a weapon to hit them with. Things may conspire such that your attack is invalid or otherwise intercepted, but otherwise it will be rolled as stated earlier.
  • Use a Power! You’ll see these later, but these powerful (if unreliable) abilities take precedence over other Actions, and even over Move!
  • Equip! Wield stuff you have in your inventory. Dropping items is a free Act. It will, however, destroy the item in question, so make sure you don’t need it!
  • Swap! Swap weapons, items or Powers with an adjacent ally. This takes one person’s Act.
  • Search! Look in your tile or adjacent tiles for stuff! Probably better to only do this when you have nothing better to do!
  • Other Stuff! If it’s not Moving, it will probably require an Action. Talking is free - gab away - but most other stuff will require an Action.

”ARCHON CREATION - ITEMS AND POWERS” posted:

You have 10 Points to allocate among the following list. You can’t save them up, so figure out how to disperse them or waste em’! Each character may have up to 2 Weapon slots, 1 Armour, 5 Inventory and 3 Powers. Feel free to copy and paste the images from here into your statbar - when it's set up correctly it should look like a nice little rectangle! Don’t fret too much about locking yourself into a particular role - all of your stuff (including Powers) can be traded freely or in some cases purchased in Bases.

MELEE - 1 POINT

MELEE - 2 POINTS

RANGED - 2 POINTS

ARMOUR - 1 Point

MOUNTS - 2, 4 and 6 Points Respectively

TRINKETS - 2 Points

TRINKETS - 1 Point

Powers: Powers are abilities that can be used to turn the tide of battle - but only when the Coin of Fate is on your side! More on that later! Additionally, adjacent allies with the same Power may combine their energies to improve their Powers! Secondary Casters may help a Prime Caster by either upscaling the Power’s roll (where applicable) or doubling its range. Power categories are thematic only - any Archon can use any Power, and as mentioned earlier even swap them with allies as they wish!
CORE - 2 Points

GRIT - 2 Points

REFLEX - 2 Points

WILL - 2 Points

ARCHON CREATION - PLATOON posted:

This is an optional section, but consider using it if you want to improve your army's overall strength. You may have up to four underlings, allocating 4 Army Points as you wish. They operate the same way your Archon does, though much weaker. They are each able to make only a single type of attack, striking out with their highest Stat and dealing damage equivalent to their current HP. Feel free to personalize them, give them portraits or whatever - who knows, maybe they'll pull off something impressive before they're killed?
BASIC - 1 Point

TRAINED - 2 Points

ELITE - 3 Points

CONDRESSAN ARCHON CREATION posted:

Surprise! You have to get to make two Archons, one for each opposing side! Creation is exactly the same, except you pick from this Portrait list instead:

You can also make your own using this program with this palette:
    Metal H 180 S 47 V 55
    Trim H 134 S 23 V 88
    Cloth H 21 S 17 V 38
    Leather H 24 S 23 V 16
Otherwise they are their own character entirely. The only other factor is their Platoon: If your other character opts out of taking a Platoon, this character must also.

COIN OF FATE posted:

The Coin of Fate mentioned earlier finally gets explained! There is a Power running under this world like veins under your flesh, and Archons are able to tap into it to do wonders... usually. But when two armies stand arrayed against one another, the skeins of Power are tangled and warped - and the world itself throws its lot behind one party.

Each turn, at the end of the turn, the Coin is flipped. The winning side gets priority with regards to resolution of movement and the ability to use their Powers! Some other Items and assorted events will trigger off the Coin, but for the most part it's as simple as that! In general, the order of resolution is as follows: Powers - Move - Attack, with priority given to the winners of the toss.

Playtest Stuff posted:

As mentioned before, this is a testbed for a bigger game with more players. Here we want to find out what the gameplay is like, see if it all works, see if it all makes sense to the players, and find powerful combinations. If you find something gamebreaking, we'll probably allow it! I'll be picking 4-5 people - if you don't get in, you'll get in next time! It'll just be patched out of the main game. And, hey, if it sucks and everyone hates it? We don't have to take it bigtime. Thanks for your help - and there might be something in it for you for any survivors!

”The Archons Take The Field” posted:

ARALKESTI

CONDRESSAN

Both forces array themselves on either side of the Plains, quite surprised to catch wind of the others. The Aralkesti Seers catch wind of their brethren on the opposing army and exchange ritual pleasantries through their arcane Powers. The Seers, powerful Archons in their own right - albeit highly specialized ones - are an independent organization contracted out to those rich enough to afford their services. And in this case, as happens fairly often, that’s both of them.

”Seer posted:

“Lords and Ladies Archon, the Guild of Seers informs you that this will be a Monitored Contest. While your respective Seer Representatives will naturally not share information with your opponents - as such would be in violation of your Contracts - neither should you expect that subterfuge will have much effect in your battle. You must, in essence, expect that your foe will know what you are planning, and count on the strength of your arms and holy Fate to lead you to victory!”
A formal speech that many of those present had heard before, but it caused the expected stir of dismay among the rank and file soldiery. Such was life in Archonic Combat, and this would be the least of the troubles that would befall them before the week was out. The Archons themselves, on the other hand, knew exactly what they were getting into. They arrayed themselves.

A distinct lack of spatial distortion led both forces to question their respective Portal Guild members. Aloof and overly mystical, their haughty attitudes made them unpopular… but they got results. With a properly anchored Portal, the Guild could deploy forces just about wherever they wished in the blink of an eye. They were indispensible to modern warfare, and damned if they knew it.

”Portaller” posted:

Yes, Archons, the Power Flow is contested here, turbulent indeed. Fear not, we will have your forces here in but a moment - so why don’t you busy yourselves by claiming some likely Bases of operation, hmm? You wouldn’t want to have to walk your troops around the field like peasants, would you?

Bases posted:

To claim a Base, bring an Archon to a tile adjacent to an undefended Base and claim it. All enemies adjacent to a Base must be defeated before it can be claimed. You may enter an allied Base from an adjacent tile and vanish from the playing field as an action. Next Coin, you may reappear within five tiles of any other allied Base. Units may be left in reserve in a Base, to be deployed on a future Coin. Archons will regain 1 HP per turn left in reserve - Platoon units, however, will not.

The winner of the Coin toss will be able to deploy their army first.

Army or not, the Archons were raring to go. They set off to make their first tracks across this holy land.

Please comment in the Discord along with the others to see if we can improve stuff. One particular area I want to try to improve on is GUI stuff - since it's not an actual program it's tough to determine what layers of data need to be visible to people. If nothing else I'll need to set an Excel sheet up to make stuff easier for people! Read the first post for rules, but remember that you don't need to roll anything unless something specifically asks for it. Attacks are handled on my end. Have at it.)

(Per some discussion on Discord, we're changing something already! Huzzah! The biggest change (and one I grudgingly agree with) is that turns no longer play out at the same time. I wanted to make things run as fast as possible, but realistically that's too fast for players to actually get a sense of what their characters are doing, and incentivizes late posters to react to earlier actions. Instead, once the Coin is flipped, that team acts first - move and action - in one update. Then the other team gets to go! In practice what this means is that you will be able to predict exactly where you're going and what you're doing to the enemy instead of it being left up to chance and your conditionals. Realistically this makes things easier for everyone (including me!) but slows them down a bit.

This ALSO means that you could roll for your own attacks rather than me doing it, but for now we'll keep it as the GM resolving attacks. If you already have posts for both characters, you can leave em up for now, but feel free to delete the spare and post after the update.)

The Condressans stepped into the verdant fields of the Plains lightly, the grass crunching crisply beneath the hooves of their mounts. The trio of Pegasi riders calmed their beasts’ fluttering wings as a stiff wind brought with it a scent from the south-west. Cook fires, burning Archonic spices. The Aralkesti were here, alright - but they were here first. With a few words of banter, they set out to claim this bucolic place for their King!

Allura’s ranging was rewarded with an abandoned, decrepit fort. She pushed open the gates, frightening off a scattering of rats, and unrolled a Portal Scroll given to her for this purpose. She licked her finger and touched a rune at its center, then slapped it against a pillar. The scroll wrapped around it, then pulsed with veins of arcane light that spread briefly into the structure before vanishing. Moments later, a hooded figure peeked his way through a slit in the air of what had once been a great hall.

He found a small village, picturesque in its quaintness, and approached it as non-threateningly as he could given the arsenal strapped under his robe. He attracted some attention as he approached - an Archon has come to town! - but not as much as he would have gathered elsewhere; the Plains of Raami were no stranger to the Fateblooded.

Reeling from the sudden appearance of two armies of Archons, the forces of the Plains of Raami - both bandit and otherwise - begin to emerge to challenge the heroes.

Neutral Enemies posted:

Occasionally, foes belonging to neither of the armies will appear. These will either be scripted, or in response to Events. Rokko's failure to ambush, for instance, resulted in the spawning of another enemy. At any rate, they will not (barring specific enemies) spawn and attack at once - once they're on the map, they will attack on their turn, but the turn they are generated that's all they get to do. Killing them will net a single BP, in general.

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

Sigsmund stopped into a likely pub, and was no sooner than he sat down surrounded by curious folk. He waved them off with a laugh, but when they started buying him drinks, well… he was an Archon, not a saint. It took a lot to get an Archon drunk, but people here seemed to be more than willing to try for it!

The next day, he awoke in mountains north of town with a splitting headache and one axe less. He grumbled, then drew himself to his feet. Archons didn’t tend to get hangovers, but that didn’t make this any more pleasant.
[Failure! Sigsmund loses Iron Axe and is relocated!]

Sandra stooped from the sky, bolts leading the way. The bandits, little more than ragged vagrants, fell before they even though to run. Such was life when one opposed an Archon! The merchant, grateful to be saved, begged a further boon - should Sandra escort her to town, she would be in a position to offer her something worthy of her stature.
[Event Unlocked! Escort merchant to NW village on your next turn to gain Something Neat!]

Katarina and Hans spent a few hours sizing up their fortress and determining how best to defend it against the forces to the north. Naturally, neither of them were professional… fortress fixers, or whatever they were called. They had people for that, damnit. Just not… here at the moment. Katarina did her level best with the knowledge she had, but Hans put in a cursory effort that did little to improve matters.
    [Failure! Base is not improved!]

Ah, resistance finally woke up to the fact of the arrival of the Condressan forces. Or else the Aralkesti, they supposed. Well, time to show them the fruitlessness of their opposition!

Devian, ever a man of few words, made a dire pronouncement to the forces of Raami before taking a man off his horse with a blast of force and retreating to the mountains.

Rokko hissed in annoyance before spurring his pegasus up and away from his failed ambush. He traded bolts briefly with a mountain archer, but they simply weren’t any match for him. And he wasn’t done yet - whistling and drawing upon his Power, he summoned his forces through the Portal, dropping them on the field to guard his flank.

Zargthax made his landing in a blessedly more populated village, causing quite a stir. They were frightened of him, he could see, but he had other things to worry about. Drawing upon the Seers’ reconnaisance, he summoned his own forces to bolster Rokko. Only then did he turn his attention to the town.
Barter For Goods: Trade in any number of common item cards for their equivalent Point value in the first post. 2 Point cards may be traded for two 1 Point cards, and so on. Any remainder is lost. Threat: N/A
Visit Blacksmith: Leave a weapon with the Blacksmith and specify whether to bolster Attack, Damage, or Range - the chosen attribute will be improved by 1 by next Coin, and can be retrieved at this village as a free action. Until then, the item is unavailable.
Pray At The Altar Of Fate: Roll any die against TN? For luck. Threat: N/A
Raid: Roll GRIT against TN4 to gain some equipment and turn the town hostile, depositing you in any adjacent tile. Threat: Increased enemy spawns

Allura rushed across the stream towards the defended fortress, sighting on some poor soul as she rode. Before he could even raise the alarm, she felled him with an arrow to the heart.

Lista took her time, posing dramatically for duly impressed squirrels.

(Getting the hang of stuff! Still a few things to improve, but I like the feel of things so far. Playtesting was definitely a good idea!)

"Well, however could I deny a lovely lady like yourself?" Sandra replied to the merchant's request. She helped her onto her steed before taking off again, heading straight for the village that her passenger had pointed out. Once there she touched down and helped her get back off the pegasus' back. "Now, I wouldn't mind seeing you again after all this is said and done, but for now I have to drive out the Condressan that's dared venture into our territory." and with that she rose back into the sky, where she sent a bolt towards the pegasus knight that was loitering at the village entrance.

But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

Zargthax made his way to the Altar of Fate, disregard the fearful glares of the villagers. The Altar here was little more than a simple stone structure built up around a stone that had broken into six equal pieces, revealing six identical crescent geodes. Fate expressed itself in many forms in many places, however the locals interpreted the vagaries of chance. He stepped off his mount and made a quick chant over the crystal. He waited a moment, but felt no resonance from within. An ill omen.

    [Nothing happens...]

Hans thought little of these country knights. Aspiring to chivalry in their decrepit old keeps, standing guard against their petty neighbours - and utterly unable to stand against the might of an Archon. Why, the fellow he was running down right now was scarcely able to raise his blade before Hans’ scepter smote the teeth from his jaws. His lip curled as he watched the fellow die. This is why Archons were the dominant force.

Tariq entered the now unguarded keep and made his way into the main hall. It was shabby, but Tariq wouldn’t complain of such even were he a more talkative sort. As he turned a corner, he was only just fast enough with his spear to drive aside a jab to his heart. His riposte took the fellow off his feet. A young man, barely blooded. “I yield! I yield, Archon! Forgive me!”
Kill Him: Gain Iron Sword and Light Armor. Threat: N/A
Spare Him: Gain Soldier Threat: N/A
Sigsmund burst back into town, enraged. It was a drat poor idea to take a fellow’s property. A drat poor idea. And worse to take an Archon’s property. Where was the blasted thing!?
Kick rear end Until It’s Returned: Roll GRIT against TN3 to get your Axe back! Higher roll may have other effects... Threat: 1 HP Lost; Increased enemy spawns

Think About Where It Could Be: Roll WILL against TN3 to get your Axe back! Higher roll may have other effects... Threat: N/A
Katarina remained behind, exploring the unpleasant old place. Someone had to guard the place, and until their Portalers could get the drat thing working there was nothing for it. While brushing her hand along a dusty wall, she pressed a loose brick. It slid inward with a click and revealed a hidden passage leading down. Delighted, she made to enter it… then reconsidered. Old places like this often had traps. Then again, she didn’t have anything better to do.
Dodge Any Traps: Roll REFLEX against TN3 to find some secrets! Threat: 1 HP Lost.
Sandra dropped the merchant off, the woman visibly flustered by the flight - and even more so by the Archon’s flattery. She stammered a thanks, curtseyed, and bade her to wait a moment. She returned in little time with an elegantly wrapped package that she opened to display to Sandra. “Holy Oil, Fateblooded. Anoint your weapon with this and strike true! Should you require more, I always have some on stock. So… feel free to drop by?”

Sandra thanked her, but her blood was singing for another reason. An enemy Archon, nearby! She spurred her mount and rose into the air, sighting him as though her were a blazing beacon. She laughed as she struck him a solid blow, then escaped before he could retaliate.
    Zargthax loses 1 HP!

Bloodied but not defeated, the forces of Raami made their counterattack!

A bolt narrowly missed Zargthax from the south! Luckily the archer in question was little more that an incompetent!

Tariq shook his head as he rode north, wondering at the foolishness of youth... and of the softness of age. Should he have left the boy behind as defender of their new keep? Would he simply accept the change of ownership? Well, he'd left some others to ensure his obedience and to bolster their defenses. It wouldn't do to lose a base to inattention, like those fool Condressans. Speaking of which... He entered the ruin carefully, well aware of the presence of an enemy Archon. He caught sight of him only once, in the foothills north of town, and managed to score a blow before losing track of him. First blood, Aralkest, he thought grimly.

Hans strode incredibly smugly into the undefended keep. He'd detected an Archon somewhere to the south, but that may as well have been miles away. The Condressan Portaler poked his head through the gate, took him in with a jolt of surprise, then excused himself. In a flash, the portal took on the hue of the Aralkesti aura. Hans chuckled to himself, then set about deploying his underlings.
    Base Claimed For Aralkest!
Katarina took a single step into the secret passage - and swore as the brick of the staircase slammed shut like a trap against her ankle! She stifled a cry, then smashed the offending blocks apart with her hammer. She withdrew a broken foot and limped backwards just in time to see the tunnel collapse. Bastards. She hopped around for a few minutes, cursing, until her bones reset themselves. Her foot was tender, but she could live with that. Losing access to that passage hurt far more. Annoyed, she gathered her forces and set off!
    Katarina loses 1 HP!
Sandra kept moving, lest she be followed. Her treasure tinkled daintily in her saddlebag, and she daydreamed lightly... until she spotted the sniper positioned in a nearby forest. Well, that wouldn't do. Drawing her own weapon, she expertly fired a shot that flitted through the interceding branches as though they weren't there and took the man in the thigh. She heard a faint shriek even from her height, and winced as he fell from the tree to his death. Better him than her!

Sigsmund stewed, looking for his Axe!

COMMAND DELEGATED FROM ZARGTHAX:

A Seer-borne comms spell pressed on Rokko's skull with its familiar hum as a missive from Zargthax was relayed to him by the mercenary mages. The man was delegating command of his southern platoons to him momentarily, it would seem, since he was already there and Zargthax himself was busy with an Aralkesti Archon.

Rokko furrowed his brow, then shrugged. He could handle it.

???

LOCATION: L20

First, Rokko ordered the unfamiliar Strider to engage the bandit assaulting their base, whilst performing enough of a tactical retreat to avoid being taken by surprise by the bandit leader.

MOVE: W1
ACTION: Attack Neutral Soldier - Reflex: TN 2: 1d8 2

Rokko clicked his tongue in annoyance as the bandit still stood after the confrontation. It's why he didn't particularly like dealing with troops he didn't know. Unknown mettle.

He sent an order for Bob to engage. At least that man was somebody he knew not to perform that well.

Bob the Rearguard

LOCATION: J19

Bob didn't want much from life. Guarding a gate for a meager living was more than enough for him. Yet here he was, part of the Condressan Expeditionary Forces. Turns out that guarding a gate was far more risky a task when the Portallers' Guild was involved.

He got his orders, and moved out with a weary sigh. Found some outlaw trading blows with a local special forces member (at least he thought she was special forces by the way she carried herself). Was a simple enough thing to stab the bandit between the ribs while he was distracted.

MOVE: S3

Rokko acknowledged the success of his underling with a curt nod, and flew to the Base battlements to render some ranged support.
