Karate Bastard posted:They have played us for fools Didn’t plan on THAT part of my PTSD playing up this morning, but here we are… Newly-minted, Russian professor (I attended his dissertation defense because I liked him [before this]) is administering our first exam in a 500-level advanced E&M course. He has spent the first few weeks casually dropping things like, “(…) of course you just use (mathematical principle you’ve never heard of goes here) and it is very simple what happens next,” type poo poo. For those not in-the-know, Russians (like other non-Americans) receive a far more rigorous mathematics education ahead of advanced physical sciences education. He decides it is magnanimous of him to make this exam open books/notes, whilst simultaneously building an exam out of mathematical concepts that were still years ahead of us course-wise. Even the smart kids (ie not me) were just looking at the sheets of paper in front of them, writing utensils untouched, utterly baffled as to what was going on. Page 2 involved calculations centered around a hypothetical, conical capacitor. The mathematics referenced in the quoted post would’ve come in handy for this, but were (at the time) completely unknown to the lot of us. Goddammit, Eugene. Know your audience.
