So ive finally caught up with this LP. I love the alternative dialogue personalities you attribute to the characters outside their respective character arcs.

So ill admit my first exposure to persona 5 was with royal (the only game i played before it was persona 4 golden). So kasumis introduction raised all sorts of questions in my mind. Why no one knew about her, the fact that she had on a Black mask made me think that she would have a much larger role in the main story. I honestly figured she would become a persona user on her own and her showing up there was supposed to be a shocking reveal (maybe throwing some doubt in the idea of who was the culprit when this black masked persona user showed up from nowhere). I wont say it was completely disappointing when her history with the MC turned out to be a bit tangential to the main plot but i did expect a bit more from their history. Overall I liked her character even if her role had to be shoehorned into the story (not that i knew that at the time since i didnt know what was new and what wasnt),

As for Saes palace I really enjoyed it. However there is one point I was a bit confused about. Makotos role in the palace and the lack of interaction with Shadow Sae. I find it strange how Shadow Sae barely takes note of Makoto at all when you are infiltrating the palace. She interacts with the party quite frequently and all of the group is there in the scenes. Hell there isnt even a cognitive makoto in there (or even any mention of a cognitive makoto at all). The only time Shadow Sae appears to recognize Makoto was after you beat Shadow Sae. Like considering how Sae appears to think of her younger sister I would think she would note makotos presence even if only to call out what Sae thinks is her deficiencies. So while there are explanations as to why a Cognitive Makoto isnt in Saes palace and barely noted to exist it still feels off.

the way the game handles cognitive versions of major characters is overall really, really weird; in base P5 kamoshida has no cognitive versions of shiho, mishima, or ryuji at all, and cognitive haru also doesn't show up at all in okumura's palace either. royal added them to boss fights (aside from ryuji) but it seems like overall the game really does not like showing off cognitive versions of people aside from ann in kamoshida's palace for whatever reason. (and yusuke as a painting, i suppose)

Given the way Sae's palace works, the cognitive version if Makoto isn't even in the palace, but likely still in the cognitive version of their home, and the cognitive version is likely not that different from the real one. The thing about Sae's palace is that it only applies to her job as a prosecutor, so Shadow Sae wouldn't notice Makoto because Makoto has nothing to do with that.

I think one's cognition existing or not in a given palace in the Royal version is more telling of the shadow's perspective of the world. Kamoshida only has people on the volleyball team and Ann as cognitions under his control; no other staff or students are shown in his palace. In Kaneshiro's palace, Makoto is hypothesized to be a cognition in his palace, but she is probably an indistinguishable ATM machine; likewise, Madarame only has Yusuke as a painting. Futaba only has her mother as a cognition in her palace, and she is the boss fight of the palace. Akechi is a cognition in Shido's palace, and he is just a plot device to remove the real Akechi.

Then i would have expected her to react to Makoto entering a area that she (in Saes distorted view) isnt ready for. Cause as we can infer from her interactions with Makoto before her palace she views taking care of Makoto as a responsibility that was forced upon her and views makoto as unprepared (naive, soft, ignorant, etc) to deal with the realities of her world as a career-minded women in a traditionally male-dominated workplace who is frequently looked down upon and needs to win at all costs to be taken seriously. She would underestimate Makotos capabilty since in her distortion winning is everything and she would assume makoto doesnt have what it takes to win. Hell I could see her mocking Makoto for only making it as far as she did because of her reliance on the group and not her own ability.

On a similar but tangential note...........why wasnt there a cognitive Aketchi in the casino? As he is involved in her workplace often enough i would also have expected a version of him to show up. it could have led to a hysterical moment when Aketchi sees how Sae perceives him in her distortion and Aketchi trying to conceal his true feelings on it. I wonder how would a cognitive aketchi be in Saes palace?

Chapter 184: 11/20: Meet Prosecute

This update covers content from Part 150 of the original LP.

Music: Aria of the Soul

You finally made it through your recollections, Inmate! It felt like it took *four years* though! You were lazing around, weren’t you?
That’s not how linear time works, but whatever. Sorry for the delay, though. I have to think about my whole life before I get interrogated.
Well, at least it’s over now. That drug should wear off soon. You need to remember what you came to do… and grasp the truth that will save you from the brink of ruin.
The evil force coming to end your life is fast approaching…
Oh, that guy? Yeah, we’re cool. Well, not really, but you know what I mean.
…No.

If you want to win this unreasonable game…
If you wish to take back your stolen future…
Recall the bonds you formed with your allies… And grasp the truth that will save you from the brink of ruin.

Stop talking at the same time, it’s creepy.

*laughs*

Yo Igor, you got nothing to say to me this time?
*sweating* Not really, why do you ask?
I mean, no reason, I guess…
Very well. I, of course, have nothing to do with your current predicament, so I have no thoughts on this.
What are you muttering about? Weirdo.
Don’t be rude to our master, Inmate! Just get out of here now! Go! Get!

Music: Interrogation Room

…So that’s the whole story. I must say, I’m a bit disappointed your crusade ends here. It’s hard to believe what you’ve told me… but it does explain everything, so I suppose I have to. I wish I could ask you more, but my time’s just about over… Well, with the exception of one last proposal I’ve got for you.

Maaku looks so done with this poo poo here, ha.

You want me to do… what, exactly?
I still need to win this case. If that means making a deal with you, then so be it.
Is that what you *really* want?
…Of course it is. What else? Your change of heart failed, remember? You might as well go through with this. It’s not like you have any other options. No one will be lenient on you if you don’t. You’ve incited an uprising against the prevailing order of this country and corrupted it.
(smiling nostalgically) Yeah… I did do that…
If you don’t make this deal with me now, you’ll almost certainly get life imprisonment, if not the death penalty.

Side note: everything I have read about Japanese death row sounds legitimately monstrous. Not that American prison is good either, but in Japan they actively gently caress with death row inmates, keeping them in solitary confinement and not letting them know when they’re actually going to be executed until hours before it happens. They don’t even have the basic rights of actual prisoners because they’re classified differently. It’s wild.

Going forward, I will read a list of people who are closest to you and this case. Tell me honestly whether or not the following are involved with the Phantom Thieves…

*raises eyebrow*

Ah, there it is.

Those are your accomplices in the Phantom Thieves case, are they not?
Never heard of them.

You won’t sell out your friends, then… But what about various comrades, collaborators, and cohorts? Surely you had people assist you with these crimes in various ways, large and small… I asked you all those questions about them, remember?
You asked me lots of bizarre poo poo about model guns and 360 kickflips or whatever. None of it made any sense, so I’ll reiterate: there were no such people. I guess I’m just a cool loner.
Unbelievable… you’re throwing your life away, do you realize that? I’ll give you one last chance… Goro Akechi.
Yeah, what about him?
We received reports that he was acting alongside the Phantom Thieves. Is there any truth to those rumors?
I can honestly and emphatically tell you that Goro Akechi is not a member of the Phantom Thieves.
I see… So Goro Akechi wasn’t one of you. Fine, then…
Akechi? Nope. Never. Not even once. Couldn’t be. Impossible.
All right, I get it.

…So be it. You clearly have no intention of bargaining with me.

You’ve got the wrong guy, lady. I don’t know a thing. I’m innocent, I tells ya!
Still keeping up that “hero of justice” act? Your teammates sacrificed you to escape. What do you gain from protecting them?
Selling them out isn’t justice.

You call this justice?
Justice…?

All right, then. What is this vaunted “justice” of yours?
Protecting the weak.
So simple. You have a child’s view of the world.
I am a child. What’s your excuse?
……

*sigh* You continue to stand firm… Are you implying that we have no evidence on you? …You’re right—we have nothing. And it doesn’t help that your story sounds like a fairy tale! But many people have fallen victim to this! We need to learn the truth.

…But what is the truth any more? I can’t even figure out what’s right and wrong now… And it’s your fault. That drat story of yours did this to me!
So you’re giving up on finding the true culprit?
You’re *still* going on about—

Hey, you listening? That drug’s wearing off, right? Don’t bother trying to deceive me, I can tell.
It implies some unsavory things about you that you can recognize the lack of symptoms so easily… Hm… Wait… “Deceive”… Was there something I was supposed to do?

He deceived us…

No, I remembered that part…
Hey… My time is just about up. Your story is interesting… but this is the limit of my power.
We can still win… You… Me… All of us…
What are you talking about… I’m not even on this case anymore… I won’t get credit no matter the result. I had to spend a large favor just to interrogate you here.
I’m not talking about credit… There’s something more important, don’t you get that? But what… was I meant to do? “Interrogate”… In this room… I was meant to…

How’d it go, Futaba? Niijima mentioned that special interrogation room, right?
Yep!
Then all we need to do is lure them there.

It’s on the tip of my tongue…
*snapping fingers in front of Maaku’s face* You keep staring off into space. Anyway, I’m sorry, but this is the end of my rope. Goodbye.
…Did you plan this?
Huh? What are you talking about?…Actually, there’s one last thing I needed to ask you. It’s been bothering me for a while… You were told someone sold you out, right? I was in charge of this case, but an inside informant was never part of our investigation. Do you have any idea who could have been responsible?

That’s right… There’s something I need to do…

He’s going to sell us out… But we’ve figured out our countermeasure. We just need to find a way to hand over that smartphone…

What’s wrong? Do you remember who sold you out?
I do know… It’s a little embarrassing, actually… I never forgot that part… I just held it back for dramatic effect…

Music: Disquiet

You know who it is!? *slams table*
Hey, don’t be mean to the table…
Please, you have to tell me what you know! I promise you I won’t let it end like this!
That phone…

The encryption on it is strong, but we’ll crack it soon. What’s so important about it? Are you going to unlock it for me.
No.
Then what are you—

Let’s let Futaba rest. She’s been working on that app for days without sleep. Now, all that’s left is to figure out how to show him that phone.
Huh? Who were we talking about again?
The traitor, you f—

I need you to show it to the real culprit. The traitor.
What!?

Public security questioning will occur on the first day… and with that room, my task will be simple. And thus, the dangerous criminal responsible for the mass mental shutdowns shall end his own life.

Sae slams the table once, and then once more.

I *just* said to be nice to the ta—

I need you to be clear with me! Who am I supposed to show this to?

I already told you. Not a Phantom Thief.

What do you…?

…Wait, you can’t mean… him?
I’m glad you picked up on it… That was a pretty good line and I didn’t want it to go to waste… That aside, I need you to trust me… Please.

*sigh* What are you plotting? I can’t even begin to fathom it.

…But it appears my time is up. This is as far as our conversation can go. This will be my last involvement with this case…

*looks Sae dead in the eye*

Heh… …Very well. I’ve listened to your whole story, so I may as well play along to the end. And that honest look in your eyes… I used to view the world the same way too, once. I’ll place my bet on you.

That means a lot, coming from you.

I just need to show him the phone, right?
I feel as if Sae finally understands me…

Music: The Spirit

So, uh… I feel like we’re just about at the apex of this relationship, but you haven’t made a pass at me yet. Is that gonna happen, or…?
…What.
I’m not offended if you’re not gonna, to be clear. It’s just that almost every other woman in my life, at about this point, starts making googly eyes at me. It’s pretty weird, not gonna lie.
Well, I’m not going to. I’m a professional.
Cool. Cool. Coolcoolcool.

(In case it wasn’t clear from this, Sae is still not romanceable in Royal. I’m honestly shocked they didn’t budge on that, it’s like the one time this game doesn’t go for the most indulgent option).

Lol this took two weeks almost entirely because I was dreading it so much due to the fact that it is a scene made entirely out of two people talking (mostly one person, really!), which required a ton of rewriting from me. It wasn't that bad when I actually got to work on it, but updates might be a bit slow until we get past the dreaded scene in Leblanc that's like twenty loving minutes of people explaining what just happened.

I do really appreciate how quickly Joker gets fleshed out compared to the previous protagonists. We get the Casino opening where he's Phantom Thief Joker, who is a total showboat and is having a blast, and then it cuts to Prison Maaku, who just looks constantly pissed and is radiating defiance despite being wholly up poo poo creek, and then it cuts to Student Hamiru who just looks spacey and kind of gormless.

He pretty quickly slides into "quiet, determined dude everyone looks up to for leadership and support," when the story proper gets rolling, but it's cool that the game makes an effort to give him an actual personality off the bat.

We already know she's visited Leblanc before, they could theoretically have just had her hang around there occasionally the same way occasionally other people like pop by (though granted it's not as weird with them since they're your similarly aged friends visiting you).

The law protects no one unless it binds everyone, binds no one unless it protects everyone.

It couldn’t possibly be any worse than like, Oya, who you only ever meet in a professional context. Or Takumi. There’s really not a lot to base some of the confidant romances on.

Not saying that means they should have done a Sae romance, just that it doesn’t seem like it not making much sense generally stopped them. It sorta feels like for the others they’re assuming you fill in some more contact with your imagination or something, which I guess is harder with Sae, but still.

Chapter 185: 11/20: The Pledge

This update covers content from Part 151 of the original LP.

Music: Desire

Akechi-kun…!
Did you like that entrance? I was waiting in that dark spot for about twenty-five minutes until the elevator came back up. Speaking of which, they really need better lighting in this hallway…
What are you even doing here? I directly oversaw this case and I still needed my director to step in to give me access!
I got here the same way you did. I’m in charge of the investigation now, after all.
Huh!?
Kidding, kidding. I’m just here to assist. I’m a bit surprised about this location, though. So far underground, and with no other prisoners… If things got a bit violent, who would ever know?
That’s an uncharacteristically dark joke for you to make… and you’re a bit late on that front anyway.
Maybe you just don’t know me as well as you thought.
That’s certainly possible… But didn’t you say you believed in a culprit other than the Phantom Thieves?
Come now, Sae-san! That was an obvious ruse to entrap them! But I apologize for deceiving you as well. If you wish to trick your enemies, you must first trick your allies.

…So it was you. You’re the one who sold out the Phantom Thieves.

To be clear, it’s Akechi. Akechi’s the traitor. Show Akechi the phone.

Is there a problem?

Hey, look at this phone I’m holding. Isn’t it cool?
I suppose it is rather impressive. Do you have any games on it, perchance?
Oh, it’s not mine. It belonged to the leader of the Phantom Thieves. Does it look familiar at all? Maybe you should hold onto it for the investigation, just in case.
I doubt that will be necessary. I was acting alongside the Phantom Thieves myself, so there’s little need for more evidence.
You have an interesting approach to policework…

It’s utterly hilarious that Sae almost ruins this whole gambit by offering to let Akechi have the phone instead of just showing it to him. I don’t blame her, this plan requires a rather specific set of actions from two parties who are both completely unaware of said plan, but if Akechi took that phone and got the messages from Futaba it’s just game loving over. The team needed some better instructions for Maaku to pass on to Sae, there.

Well, congratulations, I suppose. Good luck in there.

It’s so exhausting dealing with utter simpletons… I keep feeling this mask I’ve made for myself slipping off. Not that it will matter for much longer…

*smiling widely, barely restraining laughter*

Akechi’s stealing a cop’s gun, now that’s praxis!

Well, you all made this into an utter clusterfuck, even if I ultimately managed to turn the situation to my advantage. I suppose congratulations are in order. You shined so brightly… But now, it’s time you burned yourself out.

Now, part of it is because Akechi’s reworked Confidant means that there’s no longer a rank up here, but I appreciate that they cut the completely nonsensical inner monologue from Cognitive Maaku here.

I feel like part of that is simply Maaku doing everything he can to sell the illusion to Akechi, putting in that little bit of extra effort to completely dupe Akechi into believing he won.

The other, more likely option, is: "What, take a few minutes to cross-check the animated cutscenes so they don't look goofy and/or ridiculous? Nah, that's crazy talk.".

I mean, Maaku isn't actually doing anything, the Maaku that gets shot is just what Sae thinks he's like. From her perspective he is very cool and dignified but also she has no idea how he'd react to a dude strolling in, killing the witness, and pointing a gun in his face, so Cognitive Maaku kinda short circuits when it happens.

Real Maaku would at least have had the option of either saying a cool zinger or something emotional.
