Is there a particular reason breaks never get given the huge time gaps they used to?

5 years ago this break would have been on 10 minutes and would still be utterly doomed, but now they're being held at 90 seconds.

Those were TV breakaways by helpers who weren't expected to be doing anything else but might be given a chance at glory, to give the commentators something to talk about when they'd start broadcasting half-way through the stage, while the peloton was just wheeling them in slowly.
The reason you don't see it nowadays is because there's constant coverage, which means more high-profile people are likely to attack, which means they can't be given as much rope to hang themselves with.

I'd be curious whether there are statistics for a breakaway being statistically more likely to win then or now, though.

I think the base fitness level of riders is much higher too, less of a gap between them and the top-team domestiques so it's too risky to let a break of the most no-name of no-name riders get a big lead.

Anecdotally speaking over the last decade it sure seems like less surviving breakaways.

I'm less sure. It's slightly less flat than I was expecting from the profile but Ganna was faster than him right up until the climb last time. Would be very funny if Pog pips him tho.

Unclear at this point, so many of the non-GC guys will be taking it easy to save their legs for the queen stage tomorrow. Ineos have too many top TTers so might not let them go for it apart from G. Probably Ganna & Arensman (10th in GC now) get a pass though

I just watched the “Irish” TT champion Ryan Mullen set off at about 15mph, obviously not allowed to smash.

Old Pog might have tried to go for it, but after stage 10 I think UAE might legitimately try to kill him if he starts to go all out
