It is filled with tons of clichés and the story itself is one where they slam a year’s worth of events and emotions and character arcs into an 8 hour shift. It is like a high school kid wrote it. Empire Records that is.

iirc Empire Records was originally written to be set over two days; not sure whether that improves it significantly, I only saw it once, like in 2001

Empire Records is not good, and was pushed way too hard to be a "voice of the kids" movie, but it's perfectly fine pablum.
